What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy (SWT) is a non-invasive treatment in which a device is used to pass acoustic shockwaves through the skin to the affected area, it can be utilised in the treatment of tendon and bone pathology.

The shockwaves stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms to facilitate the repair of the damaged tendon and bone. Results vary depending on the condition being treated, ranging between 60-90% response rate for shockwave. A normal course of treatment will consist of three to six sessions with no more than a two-week gap between sessions. More sessions could be considered for chronic conditions. There will then be a 3 month pause period for the body to continue the healing process.

What are the advantages of Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy can be used in chronic conditions where other options have failed, instead of surgery or where surgery isn’t an option (e.g. due to certain health conditions or medications).

How successful is shockwave therapy?

Like other forms of treatment, a 100% success rate can’t be guarantee. Research vary’s depending on the condition being treated, ranging between 60-90% response rate for shockwave. We don’t want to just treat the symptoms, so we follow the 6 step protocol. Shockwave is not a quick fix and can take months after to feel the benefits, it isnt uncommon for injuries to reoccur. That is why it is important to understand what the cause is.

The number of treatment sessions vary depending on the type of condition and the length of time you have had it for. We generally find 6 treatments offer the best results and cost effective. it is important that sessions are delivered weekly and the block is completed. It is advised to have 1-2 follow ups of Osteopathic treatment but this is optional and patient dependant. Once a 6 block is complete we will email 3-4 months after treatment to see how recovery is going. Please note no refunds can be offered due to the machine being used. In the case of not completing a block of Shockwave treatment, you can use remaining balance on Osteopathic treatment or Sports Massage but there will be no refunds.
